Solution to Puzzle Of The Week #14

Hello APEX families,

My apologies for posting the solutions to the logic puzzles a couple of days late!

Please check the attached file for the solutions.

The following students tried one or both the puzzles:

Alexa Schehrer

Owen Weekley
Quinn Kimmett

They ALL got any completed puzzles correct! Yay!! Kudos to them!!!

James Schmeisser won the raffle :-)  James, please stop by to pick a prize! Everyone else, stop by for a small treat!

Thank you, as always, for trying these puzzles. Hope you had fun!

Week 19 of Classes: Thursday, Jan 30

Dear APEX Families,

Here's the summary of classes today:

Geometry: We went over a couple of proofs from the last chapter test to help students get a better understanding of proofs involving unequal sides or angles. We continued our chapter on polygons. After reviewing the formulae for number of diagonals and sum of interior angles of any polygons, students found that the sum of all exterior angles of any polygon is always 360 deg.

Homework: To be assigned on Friday

Algebra 2: We used the overhead projector to solve several 2nd degree equations by classifying them into different conic sections, figuring out the shape's salient features and then graphing them. Students were also introduced to hyperbolas, their equations, how they are graphed, as well as some of their uses.

Homework: To be assigned on Friday

Pre-algebra: Student learned to simplify algebraic equations before solving them. We started a new chapter on combining multiple terms with x's.

Week 18 of Classes: Friday, Jan 24

Dear APEX Families,

Here's the summary of classes today:

Geometry: We started a new chapter on general polygons. Students the names of 5-sided to 10-sided convex polygons. They also learned to figure out the number of diagonals and the sum of all interior angles inside any polygon.

Homework: Assigned (see the homework post)

Algebra 2: We continued our discussion of conic sections and focused on circles and ellipses.

Homework: Assigned (see the homework post)

Pre-algebra: Students learned to write equations with multiple operations from words. They needed to pay attention to the order of operations in order to do so. They also learned to solve simple 2-step algebraic equations by undoing operations in reverse order of operations (SADMEP is a good mnemonic to remember this principle).

Homework: Assigned (see the homework post)

Consumer Math: Students set up the school store during lunch and did a good job selling different items to our students. During class, we did the accounting for the school store. Then students learned to fill-in a transaction register to keep tab on transactions related to their checking accounts. We then started a new project on Budgeting.

Homework: Assigned (see the homework post). A physical copy of the homework was also given to students.

Problem of the Week #14: Problem of the Week #14 is posted today. Answers for last week's problems (POW #13) will be posted by tonight.

Thanks
Mrs. Narayanswamy

Week 18 of Classes: Thursday, Jan 23

Dear APEX Families,

Here's the summary of classes today:

Homework: To be assigned on Friday

Algebra 2: We did a few word problems to review and reinforce what we had learned last week about parabolas. We also did a few word problems to illustrate how parabolas are often used in real world situations.

Homework: To be assigned on Friday

Pre-algebra: Students learned to write equations with multiple operations from words. They needed to pay attention to the order of operations in order to do so. They also learned to solve simple 2-step algebraic equations by undoing operations in reverse order of operations (SADMEP is a good mnemonic to remember this principle).

Homework: Assigned (see the homework post)

Consumer Math: Students set up the school store during lunch and did a good job selling different items to our students. During class, we did the accounting for the school store. We reviewed the homework that was assigned last week. We then started a new project on Budgeting.

Homework: None. Make sure to submit last week's homework if you haven't already done so.

Week 17 of Classes: Friday, Jan 17

Dear APEX Families,

Happy New Year!

It was so wonderful to see your students today after the winter break! I am excited for this new semester. I hope it is filled with a joy to learn and grit to work hard and persevere if the going ever gets difficult. APEX teachers are here to go on this educational journey with you and help you succeed!

Students in many of the academic math classes took home a sheet of class expectations, policies and reminders. There is nothing new on this sheet, just reminders of how the class works. Parents and students, please take the time to read and discuss the policies and expectations and sign and date the sheet. It is due next week.

Note: School store will be open next week for business! Please come and shop with us :-)

Here's the summary of classes today:

Geometry: Students learned theorems that help prove a quadrilateral to be a parallelogram.

Homework: Assigned (see the homework post)

Algebra 2: We continued our discussion of 2nd degree equations with 2 variables and primarily focused on parabolas. Students learned the characteristics of this shape and how to draw a parabola by determining it's vertex and two other points.

Homework: Assigned (see the homework post)

Pre-algebra: We reviewed integer operations in algebraic equations. Students learned how to process algebraic equations involving negative signs in front of x's. We started a new chapter on algebraic equations with more than one operations. We reviewed the order of operations (aka PEMDAS).

Homework: Assigned (see the homework post)

Consumer Math: Students were introduced to a simple app named Padlet which allowed them to share their thoughts on a common electronic board. Students learned to write checks and practiced writing them.

Homework: None

Problem of the Week #13: It's a new year! Enjoy solving some 2020 puzzles this week from MathCounts!

Thanks
