Homework Due Th/Fri, Oct 10/11, 2019

City of Ember Writing Assignment #1: Think about Doon's discovery of the book of old sayings on page 120 when he is researching about fire in the library. He is confused and can't make sense of things like 'hogwash' and 'in the same boat' nor could the author of the book.  What does this tell you about life in Ember?  What other sayings exist in our world that would make no sense in Ember?  Write a complete paragraph in which you respond to each question in full. Do this on this doc or on your own paper.

Please read City of Ember, chapters 9-12 and add to magic book of notes, specifically thinking about conflicts and potential themes.

Homework Due Thurs./Fri., Sept. 26/27, 2019

This is EXTRA CREDIT so do it if you would like:
Many times, science fiction authors' writing serves as a warning of some kind.
Consider some of the readings we have done so far:  "All Summer in a Day," Midnight Sun," "Harrison Bergeron," and "The Pedestrian."  Select one of these stories and write a paragraph in which you discuss what you think the author is warning people about and how successful he is in doing so.  Include details from the story to support your ideas.

This is REQUIRED:
Please read Chapters 1 - 4 of City of Ember and make sure that you understand
  • what the setting is - time & place
  • who the characters are - so far
  • what conflicts are present or are hinted at

Class Agenda for Thursday/Friday, Sept. 19/20, 2019

Homework Check: What did you make illegal?  Make sure to turn in or share your story start         with me!
Imagine...Then Write! (First-Person, Journal Style)
        1.  ...a catastrophic event has happened on earth that has poisoned the atmosphere.
Where could people go to survive? What would life be like?
        2. ...you live in a place with only artificial light. Where might that be? How would
                people survive?
         3.  ...you live in a world with that is running out of food and other necessities.  How                             would people feel? What would they do?

Homework Due Thursday/Friday, Sept. 19/20, 2019

1.  Please read : "The Pedestrian" by Ray Bradbury

2.  The protagonist in Bradbury's story is arrested for walking.  Harrison Bergeron is taken away for being too clever and plotting to overthrow the government.  Think of a future world in which something we now do routinely is made illegal.  Write a one to two paragraph beginning to a story about this.  Do it on a google doc that you share with me, or on good ol' paper (hey! What if handwriting were made illegal in the future?!?)

Homework Due Thursday/Friday, Sept. 12/13, 2019

Due Thursday/Friday, September 12/13, 2019
1.  Please finish "Midnight Sun" if we didn't in class, and think about what makes it an example of a science fiction story.

2. Here's a strange-ish story from 1961 called "Harrison Bergeron" by Kurt Vonnegut.  Please read it and then answer the questions that follow it in writing (either on the doc if you make your own copy of it, or on a separate piece of paper to turn in).

Homework Due Thursday/Friday, Sept. 5/6 2019
