Add two memorable quotes to that back cover - things character say or the narrator writes

Due:

Assignment

City of Ember Writing Assignment #1: Think about Doon's discovery of the book of old sayings on page 120 when he is researching about fire in the library. He is confused and can't make sense of things like 'hogwash' and 'in the same boat' nor could the author of the book.  What does this tell you about life in Ember?  What other sayings exist in our world that would make no sense in Ember?  Write a complete paragraph in which you respond to each question in full. Do this on this doc or on your own paper.

Please read City of Ember, chapters 9-12 and add to magic book of notes, specifically thinking about conflicts and potential themes

Due:

Assignment

Read City of Ember, Chapters 5 - 8
Add to Magic Book
Major & Minor Characters, Conflicts and Chapter 5-8 Summaries
Quotes, Notes, Anecdotes - anything that strikes you as something you want to
                        remember as you read.

Optional: Using the template provided in class (it won't make a whole house!), one on this site, another you find online, or any other method, create a cardboard Ember-style house for our city. Windows are nice so the lights can shine through (at least before curfew!)

Due:

Assignment

This is EXTRA CREDIT so do it if you would like:
Many times, science fiction authors' writing serves as a warning of some kind.
Consider some of the readings we have done so far:  "All Summer in a Day," Midnight Sun," "Harrison Bergeron," and "The Pedestrian."  Select one of these stories and write a paragraph in which you discuss what you think the author is warning people about and how successful he is in doing so.  Include details from the story to support your ideas.

This is REQUIRED:
Please read Chapters 1 - 4 of City of Ember and make sure that you understand
  • what the setting is - time & place
  • who the characters are - so far
  • what conflicts are present or are hinted at

Due:

Assignment

1.  Please read : "The Pedestrian" by Ray Bradbury

2.  The protagonist in Bradbury's story is arrested for walking.  Harrison Bergeron is taken away for being too clever and plotting to overthrow the government.  Think of a future world in which something we now do routinely is made illegal.  Write a one to two paragraph beginning to a story about this.  Do it on a google doc that you share with me, or on good ol' paper (hey! What if handwriting were made illegal in the future?!?)

Due:

Assignment

1.  Please finish "Midnight Sun" if we didn't in class, and think about what makes it an example of a science fiction story.

2. Here's a strange-ish story from 1961 called "Harrison Bergeron" by Kurt Vonnegut.  Please read it and then answer the questions that follow it in writing (either on the doc if you make your own copy of it, or on a separate piece of paper to turn in).

Due:

Assignment

1.  Finish this:
The Sinking of the Titanic: What REALLY Happened?!?
First the facts: The RMS Titanic
Then, rewrite the story from either a Fantasy lens or a Sci Fi lens.
        Include -
  •         Title
  •         Multiple Paragraphs
  •         Facts rewritten to fit the chosen genre
  •         One Picture or Illustration
Here is a google doc to use if you would like!  Simple open it, go to File>Make a Copy and then rename it as "Sam's Titanic ReWrite" if your name is Sam. Then you can write your story and add your picture.  You can also handwrite this if that is your preference!  You will finish this for homework.

2.  Read this short story by sci fi master Ray Bradbury: All Summer in a Day. There are some questions to think about at the end which we will discuss in class.
