Reading selections will also provide a springboard for writing exercises and the development of formal essays, through which students will explore writing techniques, sentence structure, and grammar. Note: This class is designed so that students can take it two years in a row, with alternating book lists each year.

Monday Lit Comp 1

HI Students, Here is the short story we began in class today. The White Heron by Sarah Orne Jewett:
It is a sweet idyllic story but it seems you all want to turn it into a Halloween story! SO! We'll do some creative writing this week. Please do read the whole story though. Choose any place to veer to the dark side and write 300 words of your own version.
Great job with your close reading of The Pearl by Steinbeck. I know it didn't end on the happiest of notes but you all did a great job with it! I bet every time you see a big pearl you'll think of the book! Have a great week! I'll look forward to your creative twist on the story! Take care, Mrs. G

Hi Students! I really appreciate how closely you are reading the text. I think you are finding really great literary elements beyond the words on the page. AWESOME! This week please read chapters 3 and 4  and answer the questions in this HW link. Make a copy, write in that copy and share with me or use a separate sheet of paper.
Thanks! Have a great week! Mrs. G

Hi Students Please begin reading The Pearl by Steinbeck this week. Use your sticky notes to make at least 15 different comments throughout the first chapter. You can comment on anything from words that you don't know, character descriptions, setting descriptions, interesting ideas, potential foreshadowing, etc. We will go through it this next week together. Thanks for a great discussion today! It was a really fun class! Mrs. G

Monday: Sci Fi Fantasy

Hi Students! Great class today! I loved your creative writing today! You did a great job. This week begin reading the first chapter of The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau. Our books will hopefully be here by next week. Please do "insert" 20 comments in the margin after you make your own copy of the chapter. Please label it first with your name and then the document title. Don't forget to push "comment" after you make a comment otherwise it won't save the comment.

Monday: Lit Comp 1

Hi Students! I know it was a long day today! I will try to come up with more activities to keep you moving and active! (Tricky with language arts but I'm sure it can be done!) This week go ahead and read the rest of "American History" by Ortiz Cofer. It is a great story with many layers. Here is the link to the homework:
Have a great couple of weeks! Thank you! Mrs. G
