HI Students! I am giving you all of the parts of this final project so that you can start to collect your thoughts about what you want to do.
You will be choosing a historical event, researching it and (just like Karen Hesse did in Out of the Dust) you will write poems about it from the viewpoint of a fictional character. You can imagine yourself in that moment in time and how you would react. We will talk about ideas together.
Part #1: Selecting a Topic & Starting Your Research
Click on attached links below.
Start to narrow down what you are interested in and what you want to research.
Part #2: General Notes on Main Ideas
Part #3: Complete your own fictionalized version of your topic.
Finally, You will put your final poems and pictures into this slide show.

HI Students! Let's look at the items that need to be finished in the next month for your Final OOD Project. Most of the initial research will go fairly quickly. Look at each of the assignments and decide when you will have those finished. The writing may take the longest. If you figure out who you main character is you can start writing your poems over the next fews weeks without feeling rushed. Remember each poem can vary in length. We will have a workshop in class focusing just on this project in May, but always good to get started and not have to rush at the end!
I am here to help!

Hi! This week write a draft that includes your intro paragrph and 3 body paragraphs. We will keep talking about them in class next week. Go over the sample body paragraph (the one we went over in class) if you forget how to start one!
Due:
Please look at the guidelines for an intro paragraph in the attached Google doc. Give it a shot this week. Also think of at least three places in the book that support your thesis statement about Ben or Jim. You will. need to have quites from the book with page numbers. So, you might want to just do that now! We will work together again on our essays during class next week because it was SO FUN! Take care! Mrs. G
Due:
Hi Students! We will begin writing our Treasure Island essay this week! You may answer either the questions about Jim or Ben Gunn in the homework this week!

In the attached doc is a quote or two from each of the chapters you read this week.
Find the quote in the book and read around it to understand the context (what is happening in that scene). In a complete sentence or two, write who said the quote, what the quote shows the reader, and what overall meaning it gives to the book. I started that sentence for you!

Please recreate the “Treasure Map” From the book. Reference the places in the first several chapters that describe the map and make one of your own. Use whatever materials you like: dld paper, colorful pictures, etc. Have fun with it! Wrap it up the way you think Jim found it. We will show each other next week!
Due:
Hi Students! Read the instructions carefully in this week's homework. Choose the vocab words randomly and the discussion questions randomly as well! Answer the ones you choose thoroughly. I included the audio link as well. Have a great week!
Due:
Read the instructions and fill in the blanks within the homework. Submit by class next week! Thanks!
Due:
Hi Students! I am so happy to have you in my class this year! We are starting with a really fun adventure book, Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. You probably have heard the story and maybe read a version of it before. We're going to dive a little more deeply into it together!
In the attached document you will find the final "in-class" assignment that you will do on your own time. This will round out our class period to the normal 55 minutes it would have been in-person.
For Homework: (This class is rated a 4 meaning that you will have an hour of in-class work and 3 hours of homework due the following week.)
Most of our homework will revolve around reading the text 45-60 minutes a week and writing about it in the form of questions or 300 word paragraphs. All of the needed links will be included in the homework each week. The homework will probably not take a full 3 hours.
I would like to emphasize the importance of reading. If you do nothing else, (please do everything else!) read the text. My class is based on discussion of what we read and if you haven't read, it will be painfully obvious and the class will be super boring. So, please READ!
This week we will do a little research into the actual life of pirates by reading an article and writing about it.
Homework will be due at the beginning of class next week. Please email with any questions you have: [email protected].
