Description: Students will complete all of Algebra 2 through home assignments four days per week and one class period per week. Students will study concepts related to powers, radicals, irrational and complex numbers. Students will learn to solve rational, radical, and absolute value equations as well as higher degree equations with multiple variables. Systems of equations, functions and function transformations, statistics and probability will also be covered. Trigonometry is not included in this course. Students will receive a textbook, answer key and set of computer CDs with step-by-step solutions. The Teaching Textbooks program uses a review method to ensure retention. Parents will be expected to work with their student daily at home on classroom assignments.

Week 6 of Classes: Friday, Oct 4

Dear APEX students and parents,
 
Hard to believe it's Friday again! How these weeks are flying by - days are slowly getting shorter but these fall days are a reminder to enjoy the warmth and beauty of this season! 
 
Well.... here's a summary of today's classes and the homework assigned for the week:
 
We had a fire drill today. Everything went smoothly! 
 
Geometry: Students took an in-class quiz. We then went back to our lessons and talked about parallel lines, the transversal, and bunch of new angles!

Algebra 2: Students took an in-class quiz. We then continued our unit on powers. Students learned to simplify fractions by using reverse distribution and advanced reverse distribution to factor polynomial expressions before canceling them.

Pre-algebra: Students took the 3s multiplication facts quiz. We continued our discussion of decimal numbers. Students learned to convert fractions such as 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 into 10ths, 100ths, and 1000ths so they may fit in the place value system. Students also learned to add, subtract and multiply decimals.

Consumer Math: Students worked on the shopping spree activity. We will wrap up the activity with a final discussion next week.

Week 6 of Classes: Thursday, Oct 3

Dear APEX students and parents,
 
Happy Fall! Hope you are enjoying these beautiful warm days with just a touch of coolness (and some rain!) to remind us that summer is ending!
 
Here's a summary of today's classes and the homework assigned for the week:
 
We had a fire drill today. Everything went smoothly! 
 
Geometry: We went over a few problems from last week's homework. We learned a few different things about perpendicular lines such as the definition of perpendicular bisectors, perpendicular line segments that measure the distance between a line and a point not on the line, etc.

Algebra 2: Students learned to add, subtract, multiply and divide powers. We discussed short cuts that help us multiply and divide powers quickly. We also talked about negative and zero exponent.

Pre-algebra: Students took the 3s multiplication facts quiz. We continued our discussion of decimal numbers. Students learned to add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals. They also learned to convert a remainder in a division problem to a decimal value.

I decided we all need a little break from challenging puzzles. So have fun trying the KenKens. The instructions are given with the puzzles. You need to get both KenKens to enter for the raffle!

Week 5 of Classes: Friday, Sept 27

Dear APEX students and parents,
 
Here's a summary of today's classes and the homework assigned for the week:
 
Geometry: We continued talking about pairs of angles and tried algebraic problems involving them. Students learned about perpendicular lines as well.

Algebra 2: We solved more complex rational equations with multiple fractions. We started a new chapter on powers and reviewed the basics of powers.

Pre-algebra: Students took the 10s multiplication facts quiz. We reviewed mixed numbers and how to convert improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa. Students learned to multiply and divide fractions as well as fractions and whole numbers. We started a new chapter on decimals but didn't get far! Please read the first two lesson in chapter 3 so we may review the lessons together next week and cover more of the content.

Consumer Math: We reviewed percents and learned to use them in context of discounts and sales. Students worked in teams to use various discounts while shopping online on Costco.com to buy exactly 8 items while keeping within a $1,000 budget. They will complete this activity next week.

Week 5 of Classes: Thursday, Sept 26

Dear APEX students and parents,
 
Here's a summary of today's classes and the homework assigned for the week:
 
Geometry: We reviewed complementary and supplementary angles. In addition, students learned about adjacent angles, linear pairs and vertical angles.

Algebra 2: We solved a few investment word problems algebraically. Then we continued our unit on rational expressions by learning to add them. We reviewed lowest common denominators (LCD) and applied the concept to addition, subtraction, and simplification of algebraic fractions. Finally, we solved a few simple rational equations with x's in the denominator.

Pre-algebra: Students took the 10s multiplication facts quiz. They learned to multiply and divide fractions as well as fractions and whole numbers. We started a new chapter on decimals and students learned to represent certain fractions as tenths, hundredths and thousandths in the place value system.

Soluton to 2nd Puzzle of the Week

Solution to last week's puzzle is posted. 
 
It's wonderful to see students trying these challenging puzzles. Several students attempted the 2nd puzzle and three students got the solution right. Great job everybody! The winner of this week's raffle for the correct solution is Andrew Cunningham! Congrats Andrew!
 
If parents or siblings are working with students on solving these puzzles, that is awesome! To make sure that the students are understanding how these problems are getting solved, I want the students submitting the solutions to these puzzles to be able to explain the process to me. Show your work and when you stop by to pick a treat, tell me how you solved it!

Week 4 of Classes: Friday Sept 20

Dear APEX students (and parents),
 
It's hard to believe that we have already been in session for 4 weeks! Hope you are enjoying your classes at APEX. I am, for sure, enjoying having you in my classes! If you have any questions or concerns with a class you are taking with me, please do not hesitate to talk with me. I am here to help you learn, succeed and enjoy all your classes!
 
Here's a summary of today's classes and the homework assigned for the week:
 
Geometry: Students were introduced to complementary angles. We also proved our first two theorems related to these angles.

Algebra 2: We continued our discussion of rational expressions. Students learned to use reverse distribution to factor and simplify fractions containing addition and subtraction of terms. We also tried several multiplication and division problems involving such fractions.
Homework - assigned (see the homework post). Kindly also complete the two files containing word problems about investments and distances that we worked on on Thursday. They are both already posted on the website.
 
 
Pre-algebra: Student took the 5s multiplication facts quiz. We reviewed what we had learned last week about prime factoring and canceling and then continued discussing fractions. We reviewed prime numbers and prime factoring. We also learned to add and subtract fractions, learned to find the lowest common denominator, and changed a few improper fractions to mixed numbers.

Consumer Math: We wrapped up our discussion of Unit Prices of commodities by calculating unit prices of comparable objects. Students learned the basics of percents and how to convert them to fractions and decimals. We used these concepts to start to work on a few problems involving discount rates and sales. We will complete these problems next week.
