Description: The curriculum for this course follows the criteria required by the Advanced Placement College Board Program. This course will prepare students to take the AP Literature and Composition Exam in May for which there is a fee. College credit can be earned based on test performance. Course content includes the intensive study of novels, plays, short stories and poetry from a wide variety of authors. Students will write an analytical essay, and engage in individual and group projects and presentations. Summer homework required.

Please read Jhumpa Lahiri's "Interpreter of Maladies" that starts on page 311 in your text book. As you read, consider the author's quote: "No country is my motherland. I always find myself in exile in whichever country I travel to...". How are the themes of belonging, being an outsider, fitting in, evident in this story?  
 
Before, during and after your reading, look at questions 1-5 in "SUGGESTIONS FOR WRITING" on page 326. Select one  of these questions to respond to in a paragraph you will write in class.

Little Homework: Please read "The Old Chief of Mshlanga" on pages 403 to 410 and then choose ONE (1) of the questions that follow and answer it completely, using formal academic diction and correctly set up and cited evidence from the text. Do this on a google doc that you share with me. Use a 24 point font.

1. Please finish reading Death of a Salesman, Act 1, if we didn't do so in class, and think about its developing themes as expressed in character actions and dialogue, the setting (including historical context) and symbols.
 
2. Also, read the short play Trifles in the textbook on pages 59-67. Then, choose one of the themes suggested on page 68 and write a paragraph in which you agree or disagree with it being an appropriate theme for the play. Include at least two bits of textual evidence, cited correctly (as discussed in class and here ) in your paragraph and underline your thesis.

I.  Consider This: "Theme for English B" by Langston Hughes

        Read and discuss as a class what this poem means on the surface and what it also means,        and how the author achieves this. 

 

II.  Poetry Analysis Essay

            Hand the hard copy of your essay to the person on your left.

           As an editor, please look for and correct/mark issues with verb tense, pronoun                               reference, first/second person, incorporation and citation of quotes, etc.

           Make sure the thesis is underlined and that it is supported in the essay.

           Add any other comments/corrections/suggestions you have to help the writer achieve

                his/her purpose.                 

           Then, when you get yours back, look at the editing, clean it up and make sure it's shared

                        with me.
