Description: This class is designed to integrate literature and writing for the upper high school student and prepare students for college writing. With whole book studies as the starting point, students in this class will explore the key components of literature, as well as investigate the historical and cultural context of each core work. Students will develop and refine their reading comprehension strategies and their ability to think critically about literature. In addition, reading selections will also provide a springboard for writing exercises and the development of formal essays through which students will explore writing techniques, sentence structure, and grammar. Literature selections will be determined at the beginning of the year, selected from our Literature Scope and Sequence found at the back of this catalog. Note: This class is designed so that students can take it two years in a row, with alternating book lists each year.

Wednesday: Lit Comp 3

HI Students! Missed you yesterday! Please go ahead and finish the book this week or there will be spoilers next week. Also, please share last week's 300 word theme/topic writing assignment with me. For this week, please come to class with a thesis statement (or multiple and we can talk about them) about your topic and a brainstorming sheet. Brainstorm however you like: page of notes, sun with rays of ideas coming out, flower with petals or a web. I need to see notes on a topic that interests you and how you see it manifesting throughout the book with examples, scenes etc. Here are some theme ideas: https://www.litcharts.com/lit/the-grapes-of-wrath/themes
We will work on a full outline in class this week and treat the class like a writing workshop. Have a great weekend! Mrs. G

Wednesday: Lit Comp 3

HI Students. Keep reading this week (and catch up!) through ch. 22. Please choose one of the following topics to write 300 words on:
  • role of government in regard to migrants.
  • The farmers connection to the land and how it changes.
  • Steinbeck's treatment of unionism
  • Trace the fragmentation of the Joad family
  • Another topic you find interesting
Your 300 words can basically be your initial thoughts about the topic. I really want you to think hard about the topic in hopes that when we finish the book you can expand on your thoughts in the form of an essay. Please do refer to scenes in the book. Share that with me this week. Invoke your powers of analysis and intellect! FUN! Have a great week! Mrs. G

Wed. Lit Comp 3

HI Students! Aaron and I missed you this week! Please read up to chapter 21 or page 282. Please bring to class a list of the things that the Joads took with them on the road, both actual things and metaphorical things (hope, love), a list of things they left behind, again both actual things and metaphorical things, and the things (people) they have lost along the way. Take care! Mrs. G

Wednesday Lit Comp 3

HI Students! This week read the first 4 chapters of GOW. Annotate as you go with the sticky notes. Make notes on anything you find interesting, possible foreshadowing, cool descriptions, places where you like the way the author wrote something, places you think may become symbolic or important later in the book, etc.  Please make at least 20 notes throughout these chapters. Please bring your book to class next week. Thanks, Mrs. G

Wednesday:Lit Comp 3

HI Students! this week Please watch either Ken Burns documentary on The Dust Bowl or this one in the link below:
Answer the following questions in complete sentences.
  • Could this happen today why or why not? If it did happen, how would Americans deal with something like a Dust Bowl.
  • What historical occurrences converged at the same time to make this period in American history that much more difficult to bear?
  • Are we doing anything environmentally that might compare?
  • What is the scariest thing about the Dust Bowl?
  • Is there anything positive that came from this even or period in history?
In class we will begin looking at the The Grapes of Wrath together. Please bring that to class. Thanks! Have a great week! Mrs. G

Wednesday: Lit Comp 3

HI Students,
great work on the Magical Realism short story this week. Let's take a look at another example of Magical Realism and compare and contrast. This week's story is by a famous writer named Jorge Luis Borges. Is is pretty out there but not terribly long. It is called the "Circular Ruins." by  Luis Borges. Here is the PDF:
