Reading selections will also provide a springboard for writing exercises and the development of formal essays, through which students will explore writing techniques, sentence structure, and grammar. Literature selections will be determined at the beginning of the year, selected from our Literature Scope and Sequence at the back of this catalog. Note: This class is designed so that students can take it two years in a row, with alternating book lists each year.

Tuesday: Lit Comp 1

Hi Students, This week please read or listen to the classic creepy poem by Edgar Allen Poe, "The Raven," Please Google The Raven PDF and read the poem that begins with
"ONCE upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore, While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door. "'Tis some visiter," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door— Only this, and nothing more."
Rewrite the poem using a modern day situation. Keep the element of rhyme and make it spooky. It does not have to be 4 pages long! But long enough to get your story on the page. Have fun!

HI Students, we read the small and sad story called The Scarlet ibis in class today. Here is a link to the story:http://jjett.pbworks.com/w/file/fetch/97072218/The_Scarlet_Ibis.pdf
Here are some questions to go with the short story:
Please write your answers in 2-3 complete sentences. Make sure you look over your written answers to make sure that they "make sense" in terms of wording and grammar.
Have a great week! Thanks! Mrs. G

HI Students! Nice work with preposition today! This week we will finish up The Pearl with your version of the ending. In at least 150 words, write an alternate ending to the story. You may write more than 150 words if your creative juices really start flowing! Be ready to share in class. Thanks! Mrs. G
P.s. Some of you have a lot of missing assignments that are really dragging your grade down. Please let me know what is happening with these or re-share them with me. Thanks!

Tuesday: Lit Comp1

HI Students this week please read the first two chapters of The Pearl by Steinbeck. You each have a copy of the book as well as a bunch of skinny sticky notes. As you read the first 2 chapters annotate them as you go. Use your sticky notes to make at least 15 different comments throughout the first 2 chapters. You can comment on anything from words that you don't know, character descriptions, setting descriptions, interesting ideas, potential foreshadowing, themes, etc. I recommend looking through the reading guide first before you read so you will know what to make a note. This will help make the reading guide go quickly.  We will go through it this next week together. Thanks for a great discussion today! It was a really fun class!

Hi Students! Thank you for your thoughtful answers regarding our short story, American History by Judith Ortiz Cofer. Please review the story and note the character descriptions between Elena and Eugene. Many of you did not pick up on the fact they were of different ethnic backgrounds. One of the things we will work on this year is careful reading or close reading.
