In addition, reading selections will also provide a springboard for writing exercises and the development of formal essays through which students will explore writing techniques, sentence structure, and grammar. Literature selections will be determined at the beginning of the year, selected from our Literature Scope and Sequence found at the back of this catalog. Note: This class is designed so that students can take it two years in a row, with alternating book lists each year.

Wednesday: Lit Comp 2

Hi Students! So sorry to post so late! This week you are prepping for your in-class essay on Dr. Jekyll. You will be writing about whether you think Dr. Jekyll was justified in doing his experiments on himself.

Think of it like an essay test but you may use all of your notes, book, outline, intro paragraph, etc. You may even pre-write your essay this week and simply share it with me in class. You can decide what you need to make the writing process smooth for you in class. This essay test situation will eliminate having an essay hanging over your head before the holidays.
Please do cite your quotations (you will need at least one quote+ explanation per body paragraph) using the chapter numbers (ch. 4) (like that). Here are the chapters and their titles:
  • Chapter 1. The Story of the Door.
  • Chapter 2. Search for Mr Hyde.
  • Chapter 3. Dr Jekyll Was Quite At Ease.
  • Chapter 4. The Carew Murder Case.
  • Chapter 5. The Incident of the Letter.
  • Chapter 6. The Incident of Dr. Lanyon.
  • Chapter 7. The Incident At the Window.
  • Chapter 8. The Last Night.
  • Chapter 9: “Dr. Lanyon's Narrative”
  • Chapter 10: “Henry Jekyll's Full Statement of the Case
Please email if you have questions. Have a great weekend! Mrs. G

Hey Students, just a heads up....I am missing a few assignments from some of you. DO NOT PANIC! Again, if you didn't put your name in the copied title, I may just not be able to find it. Wednesday: Lit Comp 2

Hi Students! Nice work sifting through the text to find those great quotes! This week continue to read chapters 3 and 4. Please annotate with 15-20 sticky notes throughout these two chapters. You can have more than one notation on a sticky. At the end  of this novel, I will collect them and grade on your annotation. This week be sure to make notes on the characters. there are a lot of them. Here is the reading guide/questions for these chapters.

Happy Reading! Mrs. G

Wednesday: Lit comp 2

HI Students! Great job today observing those moving photos. This week read chapter 2 of OMAM and complete this reading guide (it includes both ch1 and 2):
I recommend reading through the questions on the reading guide BEFORE you read the chapter, so that you can annotate things that you will need in your homework.
Make a copy of the reading guide. Title it with your name and then you can write in the boxes. Please be thorough and write in complete sentences. Then share the reading guide with me. Christensen_mysti @svvsd.org. Email if you have questions! Mrs. G

Wednesday: Lit Comp 2

Hi Students! This week please read the first chapter of Of Mice and Men or OMAM by John Steinbeck. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Iaf49uK_zwqikgDzbh9xbWywKYvrBCTvkyCM_CicTL8/edit?usp=sharing
Please make a copy of the document (ch. 1)  and comment a minimum of 20 times throughout the chapter. (go up to insert and click on comment. You can then highlight a word or phrase throughout the document and comment in the margin.)
Annotation is an important part of close reading. Making tons of notes in the margin is basically what annotating means. You can make a note about anything but here are some ideas:
Descriptions that demonstrate imagery, setting, characters
Things that seem like they might be important later i.e., symbolic items like animals, objects, colors
metaphors: when the author compares two unlike things in order to describe something ex: The fog, a chilly blanket of mist, settled on the city.
An aspect of the story you like or have a question about. Please share your copy with me. Thanks and
Good Luck! Mrs. G
