Leggett - Elementary Art-Wednesday Assignments

Follow along with the video to see how to create a portrait of a cheetah, inspired by the artist, Carolyn Gavin. 

*You may do a portrait of ANY animal you'd like, I'm just showing you one way to make a cheetah*

Don't forget to take a photo and "turn in"! I can't wait to see your portraits :)

Day 2 of this project involves adding details to finish your tropical leaf and flower. 

I used oil pastels after my paint dried. Other ideas: more paint with a smaller brush, sharpies, chalk pastels, chalk, anything that can be used on top of paint!

You may use any materials you have at your home to create your own version of this project. You're creating ONE tropical leaf and ONE tropical flower. You can do more if you'd like! 

You may view the video or if you prefer to read directions, there is a PDF attached. 

I used 12X19 colored paper and tempera paint. 

Don't forget to upload a photo and "turn in"!!!!

Follow along with the video or the link (if you prefer reading the steps). Although the link and the handouts say "Mother's Day Cards" you can create your card for anyone you'd like! Everyone loves a handmade card, and if you can, what if you mailed it to someone? Everyone loves receiving mail! :)


For your reference, there are two handouts attached: one for making bubble letters and another for line design ideas.

It's spring! Let's create a bird nest with eggs.

Materials:
6"x6" cardboard (from a box, cereal box, etc)
air dry clay (model magic or small "egg-shaped" rocks)
paint in various colors
paintbrush
strips of brown construction paper or painted paper
glue
scissors
twigs (optional)

Watch the attached video for ONE way to create a bird's nest with eggs. I also attached the PDF of the lesson I adapted my video from if you prefer. 


If you have a different way you'd like to create one based on the materials you have at home, go for it! The sky is the limit!!! Don't forget to upload a photo of it and "turn in".

Materials: white paper (any size), square of black paper, pencil, eraser, scissors, glue stick

*this works with any color paper, as long as one of them is a square*

Let's add some color!

Materials: oil pastels or crayons, watercolors or washable markers (really, anything you want to color with!)

I'm only showing you ONE way to add color to your folk art landscape. I can't wait to see yours!

A line is a mark with a greater length than width.

A pattern is made by repeating visual elements in a work of art.

Create 6 of your own patterns on the attached handout or draw them in your sketchbook.

No need to turn it in - just keep it handy for your desert landscape - you'll need your pattern ideas!

The attached PDF "Draw-a-Cactus" is what I used to create the how-to video, so you can also just use that to create your drawing instead of watching the video, or to follow along with the video.
Make sure you remember to use the techniques I talk about in the video to show foreground, middleground, and background. And as always, you are welcome to come up with your OWN desert landscape drawing, as long as it shows foreground, middleground, and background.

The last pdf is my completed line drawing of my desert landscape, show foreground, middleground, and background.

Turn in your drawing in this assignment. AND, keep this drawing safe for next week when we will learn about line, pattern, and using them in our landscape!

Let's make some snowflakes! These are a different take on other methods that you might have used in the past.

Materials:
- Paper (copy paper if using "dry" materials such as markers, crayons, colored pencils for color; sketchbook paper if you want to "paint" with markers like we did last week.)<----You'll see in the video why ;)

- something circular to trace (roll of masking tape works great!)
- sharpie
If using "paint with markers" method or watercolors:
- paintbrush
-watercup filled with water

This week's video will show you how to "paint" a winter landscape with markers.

This art lesson was inspired by Lauralee Chambers, a fantastic art teacher in New York.

“Found object” art describes artwork that utilizes objects not conventionally designated as art supplies, and manipulates them, usually while keeping them still recognizable as their original form.

Take a close look at the attached photo: what materials do you see that were used to create the found object turkey?

Materials: any materials that you choose that you can find around your home

*Remember, you are the artist so be creative with the materials you have on hand!

After reading about the artist and their artwork, answer the question: What is one new thing you learned about the artist, Natsumi Tomita?

She's most well-known as the author of "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" (1902), however, there is so much more about her to know!

This art lesson was inspired by Laura of Painted Paper Art (she's one of my favorite art teachers!).

The first link is the instructional video by Laura on how to create your own version of Waterlillies inspired by Beatrix Potter.

Materials: paper and any art materials that you choose.
*Remember, you are the artist so be creative with the materials you have on hand! Draw on a pizza box, lunch sack, or find an old newspaper or book to create on. Maybe use sidewalk chalk! Just have fun creating!

This type of printmaking is called a "monoprint".

aluminum foil (slightly larger than the white paper)
washable markers
spray bottle filled with water (make sure it MISTS, not STREAM)

Watch the attached video tutorial on how to create an ongoing Google Slideshow of your daily drawings for the Daily Drawing Challenge! The challenge will begin on October 7 and end on October 31.

At the end of the challenge, you will "turn in" your slideshow. If you complete each daily drawing, you will have the chance to win a prize!

After looking at pictures of Marz jr.'s skyscrapers and real skyscrapers, let's create a retro line drawing of your observations!

Look through the Google Doc to see some pictures of historical skyscrapers in New York City, Marz jr.'s website of his artwork, and the video tutorial to get some ideas!

Create a Romero Britto-inspired Pumpkin!

Materials:
- 9x12 white paper or cardstock
- Black sharpie
- markers or colored pencils or crayons (whichever you have at home)

Follow the directions in the attached pdf and/or follow along with me in the video tutorial to create a Britto-inspired patterned pumpkin. Don't forget to take a picture of your work of art and upload it to "turn in". I can't wait to see what you create!

Using Jasper Johns "Three Flags" as your inspiration, create your own flag or another version of the American Flag.

Like a journalist investigating a story, use the prompts in the attached PDF to write about the artwork by Jasper Johns. How can you investigate like a journalist and find out more information about the artist and the artwork?

Ways to complete this assignment and turn in:

Write and design a flyer for this artwork to help sell it at an auction. You can design your flyer digitally or by hand or a combination of both.

Your flyer must include:
- The image of the art
- The artist's name
- The media (art materials) used
- size: no smaller than 8.5 x 11 (regular paper)

This work of art is a type of prayer for the Buddhist monks who created it. The mandala is a symbolic mansion or palace for a deity who resides in the center as the seed of enlightenment. The areas surrounding the center represent the surrounding palace grounds. Contemplation of each of the surrounding areas leads to clearing the mind and finding a path to enlightenment. The deity at the center of this mandala is represented by a symbol. This deity is responsible for clearing away certain obstacles that would keep one from reaching the goal of true enlightenment.

In your sketchbook, brainstorm different things that are special about you (favorite food, sport, etc.). Sketch symbols and ideas that represent the different things about you.

Use your brainstorming work and sketches to create your own permanent mandala in the style of the Hayagriva Sand Mandala. Draw your plan for your personal mandala lightly in pencil, then go back and add color to the design, using materials of your choice. Work in the style of the Hayagriva Sand Mandala by starting in the center and then working your way out into the concentric design.

For this week's drawing assignment, pick ONE of the silly drawing prompts and be sure to "turn in" a photo of your artwork! Materials are your choice!

Write or record an artist’s statement explaining the personal meaning of your mandala.

How did it make you feel when you looked at this piece of art?
What do you think the artist was feeling when they made it?

Using key words from your answers to these questions, create your artwork based on those words!

Example: When I look at the painting "Blue Horses", I feel peaceful, like I am watching the horses calmly eat a snack at sunset.

Key words: peaceful, calmly

Based on those words, I might then decide to draw or paint a picture of the ocean at sunset, using lots of blues and greens. The ocean has special meaning to me, because it is my favorite place to go to relax, feel peaceful and calm.

Take a photo of your art and make sure to "turn in" your artwork.

I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Study the artwork for as long as it takes to picture it clearly in your head. Then, put it away and draw and color it from memory in your sketchbook.

Take a picture of your memory drawing and submit it.

Look carefully at the artwork.

Think about the following questions:
- What is going on here?
- What makes you say that?
- What else do you notice?

Record your answers in a video and submit it.

Write what you like about the artwork on the petals (roses). Write what you didn't like about the artwork next to the thorns. On the buds, write new ideas you had while looking at the artwork.

Basquiat was heavily influenced by jazz and hip-hop music. Many artists are often inspired by music. Before you start creating, gather your materials that you'd like use and listen to the attached jazz music by Charlie Parker. Listen carefully and FEEL the music as you create.

Gather your materials: paint, colored pencils, oil pastels, watercolors; the medium you use is YOUR CHOICE! :)

I've also attached a video of me painting to the same Charlie Parker jazz music you'll be listening to when you make your art this week.

Now that you know who the artist was and a little bit about his art, what can you find out about the artwork we discussed? Using your research skills, share what you discovered in one of the followings ways:

- You can type your findings in a document.
- You can record a video of yourself telling what you discovered about it.
- You can write your findings on paper and take a picture.
