Assignment

This week’s homework is going to be a little bit different because it leads into next week’s lesson.  The problem we are trying to solve this week is achieving energy security for the United States.  Energy security is defined as having enough access to supply the country’s energy needs at a cost that is affordable.  If nations don’t have energy security, they usually have to go to war to get access to the resources they need so it is a BIG deal!  Some people and companies in the United States argue that fracking for natural gas is a good way to achieve energy security because burning natural gas to produce electricity produces a lot less greenhouse gasses than coal.  Others say that fracking causes earthquakes, wastes water, is dangerous, and that we should switch entirely from fossil fuels to renewable, clean sources of energy.  Please write a minimum of one well-developed paragraph (5-8 sentences) explaining your personal position on this controversial issue.  Be sure to start your paragraph with a thesis claim sentence and back up your opinion with specific facts (with numbers if possible).  Then be sure to cite the sources of your facts.
