Description: This course utilizes an online “tech”book as its main curriculum. Students must have reliable internet and access to a computer on a daily basis to complete this course successfully. Students will explore the structure of matter, understand chemical and physical changes, write and balance chemical equations, make calculations related to chemical reactions, understand the structure and use of the periodic table, compare, contrast and predict chemical interactions, describe the role of energy during chemical reactions, and learn to conduct, document and report laboratory results. Additionally, the course will introduce basic reactions and nomenclature of organic compounds and concepts of nuclear decay. NOTE: This is a textbook approach to Chemistry. Due to safety requirements and protocols, this course may not qualify as a lab science course for graduation and college admissions requirements. Lab work will be minimal. Students with a strong interest in science at the college level are encouraged to take an additional higherlevel chemistry course through the concurrent enrollment program in their senior year.

As for the homework that was assigned over spring break, hold onto it for now. When we return to school, we will continue with acids/bases and the labs I had planned to do with this unit. We are going to take a bit of a detour while we are doing school online. We are going to skip ahead to Organic Chemistry, usually I do this unit at the end of the year. This will be a brief overview of what is organic chemistry and some basics on organic chemical structure and naming.
For this week:
1. Read pages 536-539 in your test book, Chapter 17. (attached as a pdf below called Organic Ch part 1 reading)
2. Read the article: What is Organic Chemistyr. (attached as O_article_-_what_is_organic_chemistry.docx)
3. Print organic notes part 1, if you can. You can fill these in the help follow along on the google slides.
4. View the google slides- (1_simplehydrocarbons.pptx) as you fill in the note page.
5. Complete Organic Part 1 problem set and Organic Part 1 problem set #2. You may want to print these out.
