Morrison - AP Human Geography Assignments

Well, we do live in interesting times!  Look at it this way, you'll have a heck of a story to tell your grandchildren!  Anyway, we are scrambling here at APEX to keep the semester on track for you all.  To that end, I have been asked to assign work this week and next to keep APHG moving so we can complete the entire curriculum.  At this point it looks like they WILL be offering the tests this spring. I think the best way for us to proceed is to have you complete the last two chapters and do some more work on Chapter 9 because the last two are not as content rich and we have at least had some time together on Urban Geography.  When you look at Chapter 9 again, please pay special attention to the models and make sure you understand them.  Also, I am going to attach an answer sheet for the chapter tests this time so you can just take a photo of it and send it to me instead of every page of the exams. Please don't hesitate to email me, even just to let me know how you and your families are doing.  I look forward to seeing you all again soon.

1.       Please write definitions (with an explanation if necessary) for all of the terms on your Unit 4 KBAT.  Then write answers to all of the “Be able to” questions with as much detail as you would include in an FRQ being sure to give examples where prompted.

1.       Please complete the term crossword you received in class.
2.       Please assemble the term puzzle into a large triangle.
3.       Please use the packet on types of cities to complete the worksheet. Give enough detail to contrast the differences between the types so that you can use your descriptions to identify the type of a city or region of the world in an FRQ stimulus.

1.       Please log on to your AP account and take the multiple choice and FRQ formative assessments for Unit 4. I see that none of you have taken the Unit 3 assessments.  Please get that done this week.  We are moving on to the next unit next week.
2.       Please read chapter 9 and answer the review questions you received in class.
3.       Please finish your EU case study packet.

Please complete your Geography of Terrorism assignment on the terrorist organization you selected in class. 

1.       Please complete your shape of states graphic organizer.
2.       Please complete the Country Investigation on a major country in Southwest Asia or Europe.
3.       Please assemble your Chapter 8 term puzzle and glue it to a paper.

Please go to AP Central and take the Unit 3 MCQ and FRQ progress check formative assessments.  Then do your Unit 4 crossword term review.

1.      Please complete your Berlin Conference Investigation.
2.      Please complete your comparison of modern vs. Cold War Europe assignment
3.      Please complete your Boundaries and Borders assignment.
4.      Please complete your “Chapter 8 Political Geography Guided Reading Questions” assignment but use it as a review (try to do it without looking at the book first).

Please complete your Chapter 8 map assignment.

Please complete your case studies on forced migration and the Corona Virus.

1.      Please re-read Chapter 8 and make scaffolded outline notes.
2.      Please complete your Chapter 8 Review questions.  Try closed book and then look at the book or other resources as necessary.  In addition, for #3,5,6,8,9,10,11,12,18,19,29 try to list (and briefly explain) 3 examples of each concept CLOSED BOOK.  I am trying to figure out what supplementary materials to bring in to help you with examples for FRQ responses.

Please read Chapter 8 in its entirety and then complete the Chapter Test you received in class.

Please take the MCQ test on units 1-3 CLOSED BOOK.  Be sure to have it done by Wednesday so I can grade it for you while you are taking the FRQ portion of the exam.  We want to start practicing in more and more in the format and time constraints of the real exam.

Please write the definitions of all of the terms on your KBAT.  Then answer all of the “Be Able To” items in complete sentences.

Please read the information and then color in the maps according to the major groupings the map book identifies for racial distribution, languages, and religions around the world on map pages 63, 64, and 65 of your map book.  As you color in the information, do one AP region at a time and tell yourself what region you are doing.  Test yourself to see if you can name at least one major country in each region without looking and to see if you can guess the boundaries of each region without looking before you check.

Please complete the two Unit 1-3 practice MCQ tests I gave you in class.  You may use any resource you like to complete them.  However, please avoid looking up any super specific facts to answer the questions until you have identified the concept a question is aimed at. 

1.       Please read Chapter 7 all the way through and then try to answer the review questions I gave you in class marking whether you had to go back into the book again to answer the question in the margin.
2.       Next, please complete the World Religions packet.
3.       Last, please take the Chapter 7 test CLOSED BOOK after reviewing your Chapter 7 Review Questions assignment. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU LIMIT YOURSELF ON THE FRQ TO LESS THAN 35 minutes.  Remember, it shouldn’t be a novel.  The grader will be looking for specific phrases and concepts and if they are there, you get the points.  Don’t be tempted into peeking at information for the MCQ section either.  We want to practice, practice, practice under realistic conditions from now until actual examJ
4.       Have a wonderful holiday season and I look forward to seeing you next year.

Please begin test corrections on any chapter tests I returned to you today.  For every answer you missed:

1.      Clearly identify the test question number.
2.      Identify the section in the book that has the information that is necessary to know how to answer the question.
3.      Re-read the appropriate material from the chapter to answer the question correctly.
4.      Explain why the option you chose incorrectly was wrong.
5.      Explain why the new answer is correct.

Please be sure to turn in the tests I handed back with your corrections next Wednesday.  Don't misplace them!

I decided I need to take a bit more time to really look at the entire unit before I make a decision about the work I was going to assign today.  So, I will put up a post in the next couple of days that is well-thought out.  I figured you all have other assignments I gave you on Monday so a couple of days won't make a difference.  I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!!

I will attach the assignment here.  Be sure to do 2 regions, one for each chapter.  Also, be sure to bring your completed chapter tests.  If you don't have them on Monday I won't be able to grade them by Wednesday so you can do test corrections before the end of the semester.

1.      Please complete the Elements of Culture assignment you received in class.
2.      Please complete the Gauda’s Son case study you received in class.

Please complete the chapter exams for chapters 5 and 6 open book.

Please complete the chapter review questions for chapters 5 and 6.  Since you already read these chapters in the previous assignment, try to do these reviews closed book.  Mark any answers you don’t know on your sheet and then complete them open book.  Staple the assignment sheet for each chapter to your complete work to hand in together so I can see how much did or did not stick with you.

Please complete the Folkway, More, Law chart we began in class.

Go through Chapter 5 before you read it and look for all of the bold-face terms.  If you think you know the definition of a term, define it in your head.  Then, read the sentence where you found the term (it will be defined there) to see if you knew it correctly.  If you don’t know a definition off the top of your head, or if the book defined it differently from what you expected, write the term and its definition in your notes for Chapter 5.  Then, read the chapter and answer the review questions on the handout you received in class.  This chapter will not be due until next Monday but try to have some of it done by this Wednesday so you can focus on other work for the rest of the week. 

I am working on figuring out how we can keep on schedule to be ready for the exam after losing this entire week.  There are 4 chapters in the book for this unit (I mistakenly told you guys it was only 3).  I think what makes sense is to have you all do the same introductory text chapter assignment I gave you Monday for Chapter 5 for chapters 4 and 6 too but please hold off on Chapter 7.  Then we can hit the ground running for class on Monday.  We will prevail over bad weather!!!!!

1.      Go through the packet of past years’ FRQs and Underline key words, phrases and requirements the way the student guidelines I gave you direct.
2.       All FRQs are written to require you to synthesize your knowledge of the content of TWO different units. Go through the packet and find a question that leans heavily on knowledge you have from Unit 1 and/or Unit 2 and copy the question onto a separate sheet of paper.  If the question you choose combines Unit 1 (Thinking Geographically) or Unit 2 (Population/Migration) with a unit we have not completed yet, look up any terms or important information you have underlined in the FRQ from the future unit so you know enough to take a stab at the answer.  Write a response to the FRQ using the student guidelines I gave you in class.  Before you begin, write your start time on the top of your answer paper.  Write your stop time when you finish.  Try to finish in 225-30 minutes because that is about the time you want to take on each question during the exam.

1.       Please complete the Chapter 4 review questions you received in class open book.
2.       Please go to your College Board account. I have unlocked the FRQ  practice questions for Units 1 and 2.  Please give them a shot and be sure to watch your time.
3.       Look over your Unit 2 Kbat. Use it like a closed book quiz.  Write each definition of terms and answer each “Be Able To” without peeking.  For the models and population pyramids, complete the worksheet I gave you in class WITHOUT looking in the book.  If there is anything you can’t do closed book, highlight it so I can see what you struggled with and then go ahead and look it up.

1.      Please finish the Adaptation/Applications and Criticisms sections on the bottom of your Gravity Model Listening Guide from class.  You will find the answers in the reading handout you got in class.
2. Please complete the Gravity Model Application Activity you received in class.

1.      Please fill in the Demographic Transition Models chart I made for you.  For the last column on migration, google “Zelinsky Model” and the Wikipedia explanation is correct.  AP doesn’t call that model by name but that is what it is.
2.      Please complete the Thomas Malthus assignment you received in class.

1.      Please complete your Armenian Diaspora handout.
2.      Please complete a Frayer Model analysis on the term
3.      Please complete your Weaving the World Together case study.
4.       Complete your Largest Countries by Population categorilla
5.      Complete your Frayer Model on the term Diaspora
6.      Read the guidelines on how to guess on a multiple choice test. Then take your practice multiple choice test on Chapter 3 OPEN BOOK.  If you don’t know an answer, GUESS USING THOSE GUIDELINES FIRST and mark a “G” for “guess” next to the answer you chose.  Then go ahead and find the information to see if you were right and simply circle the correct answer if it was different from your guess.

Please watch World in the Balance – The People Paradox video (the last section on Africa is optional) and complete the assignment you received in class.  It will be due next Monday.

3.   Finish the Chapter 2 assignment you got on Monday BEFORE you do any of this other work.

4.      Take the assessment I gave you in class OPEN BOOK but be sure to mark in the margin of any question you had to look up the answer for in the margin so we have a sense of how much more prep would have been necessary to take the test if it was not open book.

1.      Please register for the class with your College Board account.  The reason it didn’t work in class today is that they changed our join code and did not tell us!  ARG!!!  The new code is JE94X6.  Please let me know right away if you are still having any problems.  James, please have your parents help you set up an account.  Their site must have been glitching when you were in class but since Mendel was able to set up an account I think you will be ok if you just try again.  Email me if you need more guidance.
2.      Please complete your Show assignment and play around with the site to get really familiar with it.
3.      Please complete your Bouncy Map assignment and play around with the site to get familiar with it.

1.       After completing the Chapter 1 assignment you were given on Monday, please complete the Chapter 1 “Clicker Questions” to practice answering AP Exam style questions on the figures in the chapter.
2.       When you are done with both of those things, please use your map book to complete the first map assignment you were given in class. PLEASE do the assignment as it was assigned.  If you approach the map work in this way it will help you retain the information much better than if you just try to memorize the maps and it will ultimately save you A LOT of time studying.
