Monday: Homework updates for spring break

Hello APEX students and families,

I hope you are all staying safe and healthy. These past few days have seen some dramatic changes in our day-to-day lives and in our communities that can feel overwhelming to us. I hope you get to spend some relaxed time together at home during this break.

Given the current circumstances, we are missing a week of instruction time. I am posting homework for pre-algebra students that include reading some extra lessons and doing the problem sets related to these lessons. If any of the content is confusing, we will review this content in our next class. We will positively connect after the break and will continue our classes based on decisions that the district makes.

Similar homework assignments will be assigned for Algebra 1 and Precalculus/Trig students on Wednesday.

There is no homework for consumer math students.

All homework that was assigned last Monday is now due on Monday, May 30th along with the homework that is assigned this week.

In the meantime, hope you all stay safe and healthy.

Thank you
Usha Narayanswamy

Week 25 of Classes: Monday, March 9

Hello APEX Families,

Here's the summary of classes today:

Algebra 1: We started a new unit on multivariable polynomials. Students learned to add, subtract and multiply such polynomials. We also learned to use the distribution and advanced distribution over multiple variables.

Homework: To be assigned on Wednesday

Precalculus/Trig: We started a new unit on vectors. Students learned the basics of vectors, how they are usually written and how vectors can be added, subtracted or multiplied by a scalar.

Homework: To be assigned on Wednesday

Pre-algebra: We wrapped up our chapter on powers and roots by simplifying fractions with powers, introducing the concept of roots and how roots and powers undo each other and two special exponents, namely an exponent of 1 and 0.

Homework: Assigned (see the homework post)

Consumer Math: Students did a great job of selling various items in the school store. We did the accounting for the store during class and then students worked on a projected budget for their "Life" simulation.

Homework: None

Problem of the Week #21: Problem of the Week #21 is posted today. Answers for last week's problems (POW #20) will be posted this Friday.

Thanks
Mrs. Narayanswamy

Week 24 of Classes: Monday, March 2

Hello APEX Families,

Here's the summary of classes today:

Algebra 1: We went over several examples in Physics and Math in real world that involves equations to represent relationships between things. Students learned of Galileo's equations between distance and velocity of falling objects and time, Kepler's equation for planetary motion, and the relation between multiple variables such as in the equation for finding area of a triangle.

Homework: To be assigned on Wednesday

Precalculus/Trig: We wrapped up all the trig identities by deriving the half angle identities and the product to sum/difference identities. We solved a few trig equations using techniques of undoing and factoring. More on Wednesday!

Homework: To be assigned on Wednesday

Pre-algebra: We continued our unit on powers. Students learned the place of powers (exponents) in the order of operations and we tried several computing problems to understand this order of operations. Students learned to add, subtract, multiply and divide powers.

Homework: Assigned (see the homework post)

Consumer Math: Students completed their grocery list for the month and figured out the total amount they will be spending on grocery.

Homework: None

Problem of the Week #20: Problem of the Week #20 is posted today. Answers for last week's problems (POW #19) will be posted this Friday.

Thanks

Week 23 of Classes: Monday, Feb 24

Hello APEX Families,

Here's the summary of classes today:

Algebra 1: Our algebra 1 class primarily focused on solving border problems using completing the square technique and practicing solving quadratic equations in general.

Homework: To be assigned on Wednesday

Precalculus/Trig: We wrapped up the lessons  on sum and difference of angles in trig ratios including sine, cosine, and tan.

Homework: To be assigned on Wednesday

Pre-algebra: We reviewed multiplication of rational expressions. Then we wrapped the chapter on rational expressions by learning to divide, add and subtract such fractions. We started a new chapter on powers and learned the basics of what power means and how scientific notation uses powers.

Homework: Assigned (see the homework post)

Consumer Math: Students worked online to get prices of various items on their grocery list.

Homework: Assigned (see the homework post)

Problem of the Week #19: Problem of the Week #19 is posted today. Answers for last week's problems (POW #18) will be posted this Friday.

Thanks

Week 22 of Classes: Monday, Feb 17

Hello APEX Families,

Here's the summary of classes today:

Algebra 1: We reviewed different ways of solving quadratic equations that we had covered last week. Students learned two new techniques, namely advanced reverse distribution and completing the square.

Homework: To be assigned on Wednesday

Precalculus/Trig: We started a new unit on trig identities. Students learned the reciprocal, quotient, co-function, and pythagorean identities.

Homework: To be assigned on Wednesday

Pre-algebra: We reviewed the last few lessons related to like terms with x's and equations with x's on both sides of the "equal to" sign. We started a new chapter on rational expressions. Students learned to simplify fractions with x's. We also went over a problem involving multiplication of such rational expressions.

Homework: Assigned (see the homework post)

Consumer Math: We did the accounting for our school store today. Students wrote a thank you note to APEX for giving us the seed money to start the school store. We then returned the loan along with our thank yous! Students worked on the grocery list for their simulated adult life.

Homework: Work on your grocery list. We will have some class time next week to complete it before we go online to shop for the items.
