Description: Students will complete all of Pre-Algebra through home assignments four days per week and one class period per week. Students will study numbers and operations, relationships among numbers, and number systems. They will understand the meanings of different operations and how they relate to each other and will learn to compute more fluently. Students will be introduced to algebra concepts and solving for unknowns. Basics of geometry will be introduced, including different types of polygons and polyhedrons, and students will learn to compute perimeter, area, and volume for various shapes. In addition, concepts of relations and functions, as well as statistics and probability, will be covered. Upon completion of this course, students will be prepared to study Algebra I. Students will receive a textbook, answer key and set of computer CDs with step-by-step solutions. The Teaching Textbooks program uses a review method to ensure retention. Parents will be expected to work with their student daily at home on classroom assignments.

Thursday: Homework Updates For the Spring Break

Hello APEX students and families,

I hope you are all safe and healthy. I have missed seeing all the students and doing some math together. These past few days have seen some dramatic changes in our day-to-day lives and in our communities that can feel overwhelming to us. I hope you get to spend some relaxed time together at home during this break.

Given the current circumstances, we are missing a week of instruction time. I am posting homework for Pre-algebra students that include reading some extra lessons and doing the problem sets related to these lessons. If any of the content is confusing, we will review this content in our next class. Do your homework to the best of your ability and if any of the problems don't make sense, we will go over those together after the break.

There is no homework for consumer math students :-)

All homework that was assigned last Thursday is now due on Thursday, April 2nd along with the homework that is assigned this week.

In the meantime, hope you all stay safe and healthy.

Thank you
Usha Narayanswamy

Updates on Monday

Hello Families,

The last 24 hours have changed so much in our community and of a sudden, we have 2 weeks of spring break!

I would like all my students (including my Friday students) to get some rest and relax and not worry about their classes with me! I will send updates (including any homework for the core math classes) beginning of next week.

Have a good weekend!

Mrs. Narayanswamy

Week 25 of Classes: Thursday, Mar 12

Dear APEX Families,

Here's the summary of classes today:

Geometry: We started by trying a few trigonometric word problems. We then continued our unit on circles. Students learned two important properties of chords in a circle. We then discussed how a radius of a circle drawn to a tangent at the point of tangency is always perpendicular to it.

Homework: To be assigned on Friday

Algebra 2: We continued our discussion of quadratic inequalities. Then students learned to solve inequalities with 2 variables.

Homework: To be assigned on Friday

Pre-algebra: We started a new unit on geometry. Students learned about several vocabulary terms. such as points, lines, line segments, planes, parallel, intersecting and skew lines, angles, and different types of angles. Students also learned to measure angles using a protractor. In addition, students learned about different types of pairs of angles such as adjacent angles, vertical angles, complementary and supplementary angles.

Homework: Assigned (see the homework post)

Consumer Math: Students did a great job of selling various items in the school store.  We did the accounting for the store during class and then students worked on a projected budget for their "Life" simulation.

Homework: None except any pending class work from the past 2 weeks need to be complete as we start to tie together all the elements of our budgeting project.

Problem of the Week #21: Problem of the Week #21 is posted today. Answers for last week's problems (POW #20) will be posted this Friday.

Thanks
Mrs. Narayanswamy

Week 24 of Classes: Thursday, Mar 5

Dear APEX Families,

Here's the summary of classes today:

Geometry: We reviewed the basics of trigonometry we had learned last week, namely, the three trig ratios, sin, cos and tan. Students learned how the Greeks used trig to calculate distances between Earth and other celestial bodies. We did several practice problems related to these concepts as well as review problems.

Homework: To be assigned on Friday

Algebra 2: We started a new unit on inequalities. We reviewed the basics of inequalities and how algebraic inequalities with a single variable and first degree can be solved as well as graphed. Students learned about compound inequalities as well.

Homework: To be assigned on Friday

Pre-algebra: Student took a multiplication quiz. We wrapped up our chapter on powers and roots by simplifying fractions with powers, introducing the concept of roots and how roots and powers undo each other and two special exponents, namely an exponent of 1 and 0.

Homework: Assigned (see the homework post)

Consumer Math: Students completed their grocery list for the month and many students figured out the total amount they will be spending on grocery. We went over some other costs to consider such as rent, utilities, car insurance, etc.

Homework: None except for those who need to complete their class work.

Problem of the Week #20: Problem of the Week #20 is posted today. Answers for last week's problems (POW #19) will be posted this Friday.

Thanks
Mrs. Narayanswamy

Week 23 of Classes: Thursday, Feb 27

Dear APEX Families,

Here's the summary of classes today:

Geometry: We worked on a couple of problems students had questions about from their homework and then continued our unit on right triangles and trig. Students learned of the special relationship between sides of the isosceles right triangles (45-45-90 deg triangles) as well as the 30-60-90 degree triangles.

Homework: To be assigned on Friday

Algebra 2: We continued our unit on systems of equations. Students learned to solve systems of linear equations using graphs besides the algebraic methods they had learned last week. We also discussed and then solved systems of equations with higher degree (primarily 2nd degree systems of equations)

Homework: To be assigned on Friday

Pre-algebra: We continued our unit on powers. Students learned the place of powers in the order of operations and we tried several computing problems to understand this order of operations. Students learned to add, subtract, multiply and divide powers.

Homework: Assigned (see the homework post)

Consumer Math: Students worked on creating their grocery list from the menu they had created for 2 weeks. Some students found time to go online to shop using their grocery list.

Homework: None except completing any unfinished grocery list at home.

Problem of the Week #19: Problem of the Week #19 is posted today. Answers for last week's problems (POW #18) will be posted this Friday.

Thanks
Mrs. Narayanswamy
