They will develop key comprehension and critical thinking skills while collecting evidence, narrowing suspect lists, and watching out for red herrings. Students will also learn basic forensic science skills in order to investigate our very own classroom crime scene and will write original mystery short stories.

Storyboard That Homework

If you did not finish it in class (or if you were absent and can remember enough details without the book), finish your storyboard for one of the Sherlock Holmes stories for homework. We will not have class time next week to continue working on these.

Remember to include at least 6 boxes with pictures and text showing the most important characters, settings, events, and solution. Each box should have at least a one-sentence detailed description of what is happening in the scene. Here is the information to log in:
website: storyboardthat.com
username: FirstnameLastinitalApex (example: John Smith would be JohnSApex)
password: Apex2020

Today, we read "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle" in class. Please choose at least one other Sherlock Holmes story to read at home this week.

Sherlock Holmes book cover
Today, students were introduced to Sherlock Holmes and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. We started reading "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Students should finish reading the story for homework, continuing to take notes on the story map. Students MAY read another mystery from the book if they want, but NOT "The Blue Carbuncle" (we will read that in class next week).

Parents, be aware that, although this is a kid-friendly version of Sherlock Holmes, some of the stories do involve a death (although never gruesomely described). You may wish to preview the stories if that is a concern ("The Redheaded League" is a good choice!).

Elementary Language Arts

What a fun week and a great way to wrap up the semester! Thank you for all the gifts and kind notes this week. I feel so lucky that you let me be a part of your family's homeschool journey!

No homework in any elementary language arts classes over winter break. Have a wonderful, relaxing holiday, and I will see you in the new year!

Mystery Book Project DUE next week

Just a reminder that your mystery book project is due next week. Please see the assignment sheet from class (also on the website) for details.

Mystery Book Project

See attachment for details about the Mystery Book Project you received in class last week. As we continue to read and solve mysteries in class like Saxby Smart and Sherlock Holmes, you should start working on this project at home. Projects will be presented in class the week of December 8.

First Day Reminders

It was a great first day at Apex! Students worked together to collect clues and solve puzzles in order to crack "The Case of the Missing Mona Lisa".

Also, just a reminder for students to bring a 2-pocket folder and a have a section in their binder for this class.
