Description: Colorado’s rich past offers an opportunity to examine major themes of U.S. history from the unique perspective of the West. Colorado’s women were considered the “great experiment” because they were allowed to vote and brave striking miners played a pivotal role in winning worker’s rights nationwide. From gold fever to ghostly legends, disappearing tribes to disappearing treasures, ghastly villains to gallant heroes, to a mad scientific genius, to the WORLD’S WORST EXPLORER, Colorado History has it all!

Past Assignments

Due:

Assignment

  1. Please read Mystery Gold of Bent County. Write a story that explains how the gold got there, who the mysterious man on the black wagon was, and why he ended up leaving some of the gold behind.
  2. Read Hijacked 49er Gold Buried on Colorado Plains and Clifford – Colorado Ghost Town. Go to Google Maps.  Type Clifford Colorado in the search bar and it will show you where Clifford used to be.  Choose the satellite view so you can see what the land looks like.  Use the clues in your reading to figure out where you would search first if you were trying to find the gold.  Mark that place on the map you received in class and write one paragraph explaining why you chose the place you did.

Due:

Assignment

Read all 4 versions of the story of the Reynolds Treasure.  List a minimum of 5 examples of contradictory facts between the 4 versions.  Then, write a formal paragraph (starting with a thesis topic sentence) about which version of the story you believe is the most reliable account of what really happened and explaining why.  Write a second formal paragraph explaining what made you think each of the other three versions were not as reliable.

Due:

Assignment

  1.       Please complete the Gold Miner’s Tale analysis you received in class.
  2.       Please complete the Vigilante Justice assignment you received in class ON A SEPARATE SHEET OF PAPER. Your answers must be in complete sentences and there is not enough space on the worksheet to fully answer all of the questions.

Due:

Assignment

  1. Read The Lost Gold of Silver Mountain handout.
  2. Write an alternative ending to The Lost Gold of Silver Mountain. In your ending, Ted Gibbons should return and find the mine.  You can make Ted rich, robbed, partially successful, killed, or scared silly into abandoning the gold (or anything else your amazing imagination can envision).  However, in the course of your narrative, you must incorporate AT LEAST THREE SUPERSTITIONS from the Tommyknockers material we explored in class today.

Due:

Assignment

Please read Chapter 9 and answer all 18 of the Focus Your Reading questions.  Be sure to indicate the page number and number the questions so I know what question you are attempting to answer.

Due:

Assignment

  1.      Please use the Cartoon Analysis Graphic Organizer to plan a political cartoon making the argument letter to James White in cartoon form.  Then make the cartoon.
  2.      Please read Chapter 6 in its entirety and then answer the questions you received in class.

Due:

Assignment

Write a letter to James White from the perspective of the person/group of your assigned paragraph.  Your letter should make an argument as to whether James White should take his journey again.  It should include facts from the story, opinions, emotional elements, and moral appeals.  The goal of your argument should be to persuade James White.  Don’t forget to address his potential counterargument and make a prediction of what will happen if he does not heed your warning.

Due:

Assignment

Please finish reading the James White story with an eye toward possible lies, exaggerations, or unwarranted bias.  Then complete the Perspective-taking Assignment you received in class on the paragraph number you were assigned in class.  You will be presenting your alternative paragraph in class next week.  Have fun!

Due:

Assignment

Please read Pigg Hunts Bear.  Draw a political cartoon that expresses your reaction to the story.  Is it tragic?  If so, why?  Is it triumphant?  Is it fair?  Be sure to title your political cartoon and use techniques like drawing, symbolism, speech bubbles, labeling, exaggerated features, etc. to make your opinion of the story as clear as it would be if you wrote a paragraph about it.  Then fill in the information about what you included in your cartoon on the cartoon analysis graphic organizer I gave you in class.

Due:

Assignment

  1.      Read Working Like a Beaver to remind yourself of some of what we talked about in class so you can write your letters (the next assignment) with details that will make your letters more convincing.
  2.      Complete the Environmental and Business Interests in the Beaver Trade assignment (with the 2 readings) you received in class.

Due:

Assignment

Please read Chapter 7:  The Pathfinders.  Answer all of the Focus Your Reading questions in order and be sure to indicate what page you found the question on since there are no question numbers in the book.  I will not grade questions if I can’t tell what question you are attempting to answer.  After you answer the 13 Focus Your Reading questions, write a formal paragraph beginning with a thesis claim topic sentence followed by at least 3 supporting evidence sentences and then a concluding sentence that summarizes the last section of the chapter:  The Pathfinders Today.
